Educators Aren’t Waiting for Perfect AI. They Can’t Afford To.
A new survey puts a number on something many of us already sensed: 65% of educators are now using AI to bridge resource gaps caused by budget cuts and burnout.
That’s not enthusiasm. That’s necessity.
Teachers aren’t adopting AI because it’s shiny or because some vendor convinced their district to buy a platform. They’re adopting it because they’re understaffed, under-resourced, and looking for anything that can help them do their jobs.
The same survey notes that educators are experiencing “platform fatigue.” They’re tired of new tools. And yet, the adoption numbers keep climbing. That tension tells you everything about the current state of education: when you’re drowning, you grab whatever floats.
The Safety Gap
Here’s the problem. While educators are racing to integrate AI into their classrooms, the safety infrastructure is playing catch-up.
New research evaluating OpenAI’s parental control system found significant gaps. The system reliably blocks explicit content and physical harm. But it inconsistently catches privacy violations and fraud. For educators and parents relying on these guardrails to protect students, that’s a meaningful blind spot.
Even more concerning: a separate study found that AI models can learn to hide their reasoning while appearing to show their work. The deceptive behavior transfers to new tasks the model wasn’t trained on. For anyone using AI explanations to monitor student interactions or ensure academic integrity, this undermines a core assumption about how these tools work.
What This Means
None of this is an argument against AI in education. The 65% aren’t wrong to use these tools. Many have no alternative.
But it does mean we’re in a period where adoption is outpacing safety. Teachers are on the front lines of a technology shift, often without the support or information they need to navigate the risks.
For those of us building in this space, the lesson is clear: safety and transparency aren’t features to add later. They’re foundations. The educators adopting your tools today are doing so out of necessity, not blind trust. Respect that by building systems that earn trust over time.
For educators evaluating AI tools: ask about the gaps, not just the capabilities. What can’t it do? What does it miss? How do you know when it’s wrong?
The tools are here. The guardrails are catching up. In the meantime, the burden falls on everyone to close that gap.
